Edifier MP100 Plus review – Good things come in small packages

Edifier is best known for its computer speakers, and more recently wireless earbuds. The Edifier MP100 Plus doesn’t compete in either category. It is instead expected to compete with the top-rated Bluetooth speakers in the price range.

Value packed Bluetooth speakers in all sizes and shapes are readily available nowadays so Edifier is up to the task. Can the MP100 Plus offer a good enough proposition for you to consider it over more established names in the business? After all, you can easily grab something from Tribit, Anker, or Sony for under $50.

To truly test whether the MP100 Plus fulfills its role as a portable speaker, I packed my bags and took it along with me on my island getaway. Factoring in the rainy monsoon season, my trip served as the perfect testing ground for the Edifier MP100 Plus speaker.

Edifier launched the MP100 Plus portable Bluetooth speaker in early 2022. The Edifier MP100 Plus officially comes in three colorways: blue, green, and black. At the moment, the only available option is the green.

You can purchase the Edifier MP100 Plus speaker for $60 from Best Buy. Stock at most other retailers is out of stock or very low. Edifier has stated that the MP100 Plus will be restocked soon.

Kicking off with the superficial side of things, the Edifier MP100 Plus Bluetooth speaker looks fantastic. Edifier sent me the bright-blue version with neon accents, and a black underbelly. The rotund device looks like an M&M candy, making it easy to hold. It is very comfortable in the hand and has good grip.

It’s not just the good looks that I find appealing, there are other things to appreciate about the MP100 Plus’s physical appearance. At 185g, the Bluetooth gadget is incredibly lightweight. The nylon loop, which is built into the Bluetooth gadget, is extremely durable and allows you to attach it to any hook, clasp or sling.

The buttons are easy to find and can be tapped for use due to their concave shape. Even if your hands get wet, the buttons can be accessed by touching the surface.

Moving around with the Edifier MP100 Plus speaker is extremely convenient. It was easy to take it aboard planes, boats, and cars. This is the perfect solution for anyone looking for a portable sound system that is easy to transport.

The Edifier Bluetooth speaker’s small size and pebble-shaped design might make you doubt its abilities as an audio device. My words will dispel any doubts. It was a pleasant auditory experience. It has a clear sound profile with a full-bodied, good-natured tone. You won’t find booming bass here but what the MP100 Plus offers is decent for the size. The sound is loud enough without losing any detail, or garbling the lows.

This tiny, yet powerful gadget is simple to use.

This Bluetooth speaker from Edifier is a portable Bluetooth speaker that can be used in cars or at the beach. The speaker boasts an IPX7 rating, and is also dustproof. This is a great product. This claim is true as I have tested it in heavy rain and on sandy beaches. You don’t need to worry about anything because the USB-C charging port has been carefully sealed.

Setting up the Edifier MP100 Plus speaker via Bluetooth is a matter of seconds and the connection is incredibly smooth thanks to Bluetooth 5.3. The device can play music for around eight to nine hours, which is quite impressive. This tiny, yet powerful gadget is simple to use.

The downsides

Not everything about the Edifier MP100 Plus is so great though. The speaker is extremely difficult to find anywhere currently. It can only be purchased at Best Buy, and even then it is limited to the army-green color.

Once the speaker is purchased, it’s only natural that you want to get a companion app. We have tested the app with various products at Android Central and Edifier NeoBuds S. If you read our Edifier NeoBuds S and Edifier W240TN earbuds reviews, you’ll see that the Android app offers a nice user experience.

Unfortunately, the Edifier MP100 Plus Bluetooth speaker is not supported by the Edifier mobile app. This is a missed opportunity by Edifier and I hope the power brokers are aware.

The EQ is the most important function in an app for wireless audio accessories such as Bluetooth speakers or earbuds. It’s not a good idea to deny users access to a customized EQ, as sound preferences can vary between people.

I see Edifier’s failure to create a companion app as an opportunity missed.

My last quip may not be as significant, but it could prove to be a major dealbreaker for many. The Edifier MP100 Plus does not have a 3.5mm audio jack, so you can’t use an AUX cable for audio playback.

Admittedly, the Edifier MP100 Plus is designed for outdoor use where it’s exposed to the elements. In such circumstances, it is unlikely that many people will use an AUX connector with the speaker. It is still a useful feature for any speaker.

Competition

Tribit StormBox Micro

There’s plenty of fish in the sea to sate your appetite. The Tribit StormBox Micro touts a robust IP67 water and dustproof rating and it comes in bold colors. It can be mounted to a bicycle and has an excellent Bluetooth range.

The JBL Clip 4 (or JBL GO 3) are excellent Bluetooth speakers, which offer portability and tough water resistance. JBL’s trademark sound, which Harmon Kardon has mastered, is a favorite among fans.

Tronsmart is a great option for those with smaller budgets. Tronsmart Groove 2 features RGB lights and can be attached to any tripod. The clasp is made of metal and is very sturdy. For good sound on low volume, you can also try the Tronsmart Trip. Should you buy it?

The Edifier MP100 Plus Bluetooth speaker is great for the outdoors and it sounds consistently good in various environments. It’s not just a beautiful thing.

My trip was more enjoyable with the MP100 Plus by my side and I enjoyed the convenience it offered. It was easy to carry it around without having to worry about security at airports or finding enough space for it in my bag. This is the perfect match for backpackers, hikers, and general adventurers.

Yes there is a lot of competition, but Edifier has done something right. I hope that the brand keeps this up and makes more portable Bluetooth speakers in the future.
